Firmware vs. driver: two different things
Firmware is the embedded software that runs on the printer's own processor — it's permanent until you replace it with a newer version, and it keeps running even if the printer isn't connected to any computer. A driver, by contrast, is the software installed on your computer that translates a print job into instructions the printer understands. Updating one does not update the other.
What the firmware controls on this printer

Version numbers change. As of this review, Xerox's Phaser 6510 downloads page listed firmware Service Pack 64.76.81 (package PL7-R22), published June 19, 2026. Xerox updates this on its own schedule — always confirm the current version on their downloads page before you install anything.

Xerox splits the update into a reusable tool and a device-specific package. Both come from the same downloads page, in different sections.

- Print a Configuration Report from the printer's control panel.
- Open the printer's Embedded Web Server (type the printer's IP address into a browser) and check its status or system page.

How to update Phaser 6510 firmware
Based on Xerox's published firmware upgrade instructions for the Phaser 6510. Set aside about ten minutes and keep the printer powered throughout.

Check your connection and get the printer's IP address
Decide whether you'll connect over your network (Ethernet) or directly with a USB Type-B cable. For an Ethernet update, print a Configuration Report from the printer's control panel to find its current IP address.
If you're updating over the network, confirm Software Updates is enabled in the printer's Embedded Web Server first.

Get the Firmware Download Utility from Xerox
On the Phaser 6510 downloads page, open the Utilities & Applications section and download the Firmware Download Utility (
.zip). -

Get the firmware package
On the same page, open the Firmware section and download the current firmware package (
.bin). Check the accompanying release notes for the version number and anything specific to your configuration. -

Extract the utility and open it
Unzip the utility, then run
FWDLMgr.exe. Review and accept the end user license agreement to continue. -

Select your printer model and the firmware file
Choose Phaser 6510 from the printer model list inside the utility, then browse to the
.binfile you downloaded in step 3. -

Choose how the printer is connected
Select Ethernet and enter the printer's IP address from step 1, or select USB and choose the correct port. The diagram below shows both paths.

Start the transfer and let it finish
Begin the update from the utility. The printer's panel will show a status message while it receives the file. Don't power off the printer, disconnect the cable, or close the utility window during this step.

Confirm the update
The printer restarts automatically and prints a Software Upgrade Report when it's done. You can also recheck the version on a new Configuration Report or in the Embedded Web Server to confirm it matches what you installed.
